I Am The Cheese

Genetic Challenges

May 22, 2009 · 13 Comments

Just when you think you’ve got all your genetic coding figured out and you think you know who you are … something like “time release DNA” or “retro-chromosomes” kick in and you find yourself … gardening!!!like your mother!!!

the garden

Not as well as your mother, but there is still time.

the garden from a different angle

I turned a blind eye when one brother started canning vegetables … from his garden.

I turned another blind eye when another brother had a dreamy look in his eye while bragging about the free soil he scored from a local mushroom farm.

My sisters? … well … they don’t brag about their gardening exploits like my brothers do.

I’ve run out of blind eyes and can only give myself a squinty look in the mirror when facing the fact that I’m on the slippery slope to enjoying gardening.

the garden and big patch of grass!

My mother would be proud … but critical … and probably trying to plant raspberries.

note: in case you’ve never seen where I live, here’s a photo of the rental plantation.

planetross is enclosed inside usually, but not now because I'm taking the photo!

double note: I don’t know how the van … or cool BBQ got into this photo … honest!

triple note: my next door neighbour is tutoring me in the ways of the garden … and composting.

quadruple note: it’s another night of 2 posts!  It must be the weekend … but I always think of it as the strong end.

Might you consider growing edibles? That way you could enjoy the vegetables of your labors.
    Or the fruits.

Raspberries? How about taking a walk on the wild side and going for something a little bit hallucinogenic? Like your posts… (Kidding!)

Given the family history, sounds like timed-release DNA for sure. Now that’s a lovely little garden, with a few Japanese touches as well. I’ll bet that stony ground was tough to work.

But where’s the corn? When I was growing up in the midwest, a garden wasn’t a garden without corn!

Oh, I love that you are doing this! And, I bet your mother would be more encouraging than critical? Or, maybe not, but still. It is shaping up. I am a gardener who has no sense of symmetry and plant things all over the damn place. I don’t think they’d like me in Japan.

Embrace your inner gardiner! If you did all this you did great! I’m am very impressed, but really wondering now, when did gardening become a male/female thing? Get that outta your head mister!

I leave the flowers to my wife and do the edible garden my self. My garden is an old wooden rowboat that I drag out and fill with potted plants. Last year, it was tomatoes. This year, it’s peas.

Your efforts look good from here! That soil looks like a bear to work in though. Listen to those compost lessons. They’re not garbage.

Well.. actually, they are, but the good kind!

Wow! Nice garden and I like the rocks, of course. The soil in Japan looks dark. Interesting…

Your home looks nice as well. You look so tall in your photos. Do you fit through the doorways well? Your van is always a hoot to see!

    Thanks for all the comments.

Bonnie Luria: vegetables would be too useful for the likes of me.

Epicurienne: How about Raspberry Cane Toads? hee hee!

Donald Diddams: I have corn growing in another field, but other people think that they are growing it for some reason.
This is the 3rd year with the little garden: I only plant stuff where there is some form of soil. Maybe next year I’ll actually buy a big wad of soil and expand.
That tree in the corner has its roots all over the place just below the surface.

ww1kp: I just plant where I can. The usual symmetry is one living plant … one dead one … one living one … one dead one …

sweetiegirlz: What are you suggesting that I am implying that you are inferring? hee hee!

Turkish Prawn: It’s not very good soil: it excels at growing weeds and rocks though.

Tammy: I have to duck going through every door in this place. I unconsciously dip in doorways to avoid unconsciousness.

    Lovely gardens!

I like your house and love your van. That is a cool BBQ. I’d ask if I could come over for dinner but it’s a bit of a drive.. erm… swim… um… it’s too far to go!

Don’t think of your gardening as some kind of genetic memory but rather as an evolution.

I think that terra-forming is a sign of higher life.

A nice house but I expected it to look more oriental. Am I the only one who can’t see the BBQ???

  • planetross // May 25, 2009 at 11:44 pm | Reply

    Thanks for the comments.

    S. Le: I was going to put on a photo of what it looked liked just before I moved in, to show how much better it is now; but when I looked back at the photo, it kind of looked about the same. (sad face)

    razzbuffnik: I am evolving! cool!

Tony: it’s 70s oriental. It’s easy to tell how old a house is over here: they only change the style every decade or so. Once in a while I see a log cabin and that screws me up though.
The BBQ is under the grey tarp/100yen bicycle cover by the front door. I think I am one of only 2 or 3 people in this area with a propane BBQ: they don’t sell them here.
